Coronary Angioplasty & Stenting

Coronary Angioplasty & Stenting

Interventional cardiology at DDMM Heart Institute offers a life-saving alternative to open-heart surgery for many patients. Using the state-of-the-art Siemens Cath Lab, our specialists can visualize and open blocked heart arteries without major incisions.

Under the guidance of our expert team, we utilize the latest generation of drug-eluting stents to ensure long-term heart health. For our Malaysian patients, this means a shorter hospital stay, minimal scarring, and the ability to begin a comfortable recovery at the Boulevard 9 Resort within days.

Understanding the Procedure: What is Angioplasty?

Angioplasty (also known as Percutaneous Coronary Intervention or PCI) is a non-surgical procedure used to open clogged heart arteries.

  • The Entry: A thin, flexible tube (catheter) is inserted through a small puncture in the wrist or groin and guided to the heart.
  • The Visualization: Using our high-definition Siemens Cath Lab imaging, the doctor identifies the exact location of the blockage.
  • The Expansion: A small balloon is inflated at the site of the blockage to push the plaque against the artery walls.
  • The Stent: A tiny, expandable metal mesh coil (stent) is permanently placed to keep the artery open. We use Drug-Eluting Stents (DES), which slowly release medication to prevent the artery from clogging again.

FAQ’s about Coronary Angioplasty & Stenting

Q1. Is angioplasty safer than a bypass (CABG)?
It is less invasive and has a faster recovery time. However, it depends on the number and type of blockages. Our team will review your reports to tell you which is best for your specific case.
Q2. Will I be awake during the procedure?
Yes, you are usually awake but given a sedative to help you relax. The area where the catheter enters (wrist or groin) is numbed so you feel very little.
Q3. How long do the stents last?
Modern drug-eluting stents are designed to stay in your artery permanently and are highly effective at keeping the vessel open for many years.
Q4. Can I fly back to Malaysia the next day?
We recommend staying at least 3-5 days after the procedure to ensure the entry site has healed and you are "Fit-to-Fly" safely.
Q5. Do I need to take medication after getting a stent?
Yes, you will need to take blood-thinning medication (antiplatelets) to prevent clots from forming in the stent. We will provide a full prescription and schedule.
Q6. What happens if I have multiple blockages?
Our specialists can often treat multiple blockages in a single session, or they may recommend a "staged" procedure over two days depending on your health.
